NEWBERRY, S.C. - - No. 18 Newberry scored three or more runs in four separate innings while striking out 14 UVA Wise hitters en route to a 16-4 series opening win at the Smith Road Baseball Complex Saturday. Despite playing at home, the Wolves served as the road team; the series was schedule to be played in Wise but moved due to winter weather.
UVA WISE JUMPS OUT FIRST
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead after an inning of play and led 3-1 after two frames behind a run-scoring single from Hunter Meador and a two-run triple from JoJo Kelliher. UVA Wise also turned a pair of double plays in the first two innings to limit Newberry to a single run.
CROOKED NUMBERS
A three-run third for the Wolves was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Braylin Marine that put the hosts in front for good. An inning later, Newberry struck for three more runs as Zane Tarrance, Marine and Henry Gibson each had an RBI to put their club in front 7-3.
Tarrance would add a two RBI double in the fifth inning as part of a three-run fifth inning to put the game effectively out of reach at 10-3.
In the ninth, the Wolves posted another crooked number on the scoreboard with four runs to put to rest any hopes of a Cavalier comeback.
BOX SCORE NOTES
The win was the sixth consecutive for Newberry who has scored in double digits 12 times this season. Tarrance and Kade Faircloth had four hits each to pace a 19-hit effort for the Wolves.
Left-hander Joe Lafiora picked up the mound win. The Philadelphia product fanned 10 while allowing just two earned runs over six innings of work.
UVA Wise received two hits each from Clay Taylor and Cole Harness while Evan Stanley reached base safely three times in the contest.
