WISE - - UVA Wise continues its season opening road trip with the start of South Atlantic Conference play this weekend at Coker. The Cavaliers and Cobras are set to begin a three-game weekend set Friday evening at 6 p.m. before concluding the series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
UVA WISE NOTES
The Cavaliers enter the series at 3-7 but the team has won a series in the early going. Last weekend, Brandon Costa's team took 2-of-3 games at Emory & Henry College.
UVA Wise has used the long ball to fuel its offense. As a team, the Cavs have hit 14 homers in just 10 games. Leading the charge has been designated hitter Tyler Campbell who has belted five homeruns while knocking in 13 runs. Campbell is one of six UVA Wise players who has homered this season, Cole Harness (3), Justin Reed (3), JoJo Kelliher (1), Kyle Hoeth (1) and Shyheim Pannell (1) have all gotten in on the roundtrip fun.
On the mound, freshman Nash Bingham has yet to be scored on over his first three collegiate appearances while recording a win, a save and seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of work. Costa's crew is scheduled to start Garrett Stiltner, Brock Duff and Conner McKheehan on the mound this weekend.
COKER NOTES
The Cobras enter the league opener 2-10 and losers of four straight. Picked ninth in the Preseason SAC Coaches' Poll, Coker placed three players on the Preseason Second-Team All-SAC squad in Reilly Hall, Kody Hanna and Phil Griffor. Hall is off to a slow start hitting .186 with Hanna hitting .225. Griffor has been one of the team's top hitters entering the series hitting at a .360 clip with a team-leading 14 RBI.
On the mound, Coker has used 18 pitchers thus far. Chris Watkins has been the team's best arm in the early going. The junior has fanned 13 batters in 11 2/3 innings of work.
