WISE - - UVA Wise sophomore Josie Hester has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The Huntersville, N.C. native averaged 17.5 points per game in a pair of Cavalier victories last week while shooting 68.8 percent from the field, 85.7 percent from the foul line and 70 percent from the 3-point line.
The award is the first of Hester's career who is in the midst of a breakout campaign. To date, the guard ranks fourth in the league in 3-pointers made per game at three a contest while her 46.2 percent 3-point shooting is fourth in the league amongst players averaging at least 2.5 made 3-pointers a game.
Hester registered a new career-high against King last week when she tallied 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The sophomore added seven rebounds, six assists and five steals to her stat line to aid her team to its largest victory ever over the Tornado 100-64.
She followed up her performance against King with a 14-point outing in a 77-69 win over Belmont Abbey. That day, Hester made 4-of-5 field goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from distance to secure UVA Wise's fourth consecutive win to start the season.
Hester and her teammates are back in action tomorrow at Livingstone College. Tip-off from Salisbury, N.C. is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
