BRISTOL, TENN. — The UVA Wise women's tennis team weren't able to hold off the King Tornado today in a Conference Carolinas/South Atlantic Conference matchup today, falling by a score of 4-3.
In doubles play, duo Mireia May Ortega and Neem Shamsuddin of King (1-0) fought off Cavs Antonella Campodonico and Lucy Cunliffe for a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot.
Constanca Azinhaga and Amelia Monteith hung tough, but struggled against their King opponents as well, falling 6-1 to Deniz Aytun and Mishka Koricinova.
At the No. 3 spot, the Cavs were able to snag a win by default due to a King no-player.
In singles play, Cavaliers Sarah Moore and Emily Conn took two wins by default due to no-players in the No. 5 and the No. 6 spot.
UVA Wise fought tough against the Tornado in the last four matchups, as Azinhaga and Campodonico took their King opponents to three sets — but it would be Cunliffe to achieve the only other UVA Wise singles win in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat at No. 4.
Next, the Cavaliers face the University of Pikeville in a 10:00 AM morning matchup on Oct. 15 at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
