Storylines – vs limestone
Veteran coach Corry Fox will bring his Limestone squad to Wise looking to rebound from a 73-50 loss to Catawba while completing a stretch of playing four games in three states in eight days. The Saints sit in fifth place in the league standings and are playing a jam-packed schedule down the stretch due to games missed from COVID-19 protocol. Guard Quin Byrd has been the team's offensive spark this season. Byrd averages 18.1 points per game but did not play in a win over Queens this week and was limited to just three points in only 13 minutes in a loss to Limestone Wednesday. Byrd scored 19 points and dished out five assists in a 75-68 win over UVA Wise in November. The Saints have found success this season by turning the ball over the fewest times in the SAC. Entering Saturday, Limestone has committed just 234 tunovers this winter. UVA Wise would be wise not to foul Reagan Kargo. Kargo ranks third in NCAA Division II in free throw shooting percentage at .920.
With nine games to play, UVA Wise is on the outside looking in at the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Jamie Cluesman's team sits 1/2 game out of the final league tournament berth which is currently held by Lenoir-Rhyne who holds a 5-9 SAC mark. With the league's top two teams (Wingate/Catawba) still on the schedule, an upcoming six-game stretch could determine UVA Wise's fate. The Cavs play Mars Hill, Anderson, Queens, Coker and Lenoir-Rhyne in addition to Limestone over the stretch. History figures to be made Saturday as well, junior guard Nia Vanzant enters the contest with 993 career points. The 5-foot-7 Vanzant will become the 23rd player in program history to reach the 1,000 point plateau when she does so. A player to watch Saturday is Kalee Johnson who netted 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the first meeting between the schools this season.
