Newberry's home tilt with UVA Wise Saturday is one of the South Atlantic Conference's biggest games this weekend. Currently, the Wolves sit in a three-way tie for eighth place, the final spot in the SAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are just 1/2 game in front in seventh place. Saturday's winner will take a step toward postseason play while the loser will be playing from behind heading towards February. Coach Joanna Tincher's squad most recently put together one of its more complete games of the season in a 79-71 win at Limestone. A pair of Wolves scored 20 or more in the win, led by Giulia Bongiorno's 21-point outing. Teammate Courtney Virgo netted 20 points thanks to a 4-for-8 showing from the 3-point line. Newberry controlled the glass in the win as well, out rebounding Limestone 43-to-30 as five Wolves had at least five rebounds. Offensive rebounding could be something to watch Saturday, Newberry ranks second in the SAC with 15.2 offensive rebounds per game while UVA Wise is 11th in the league in rebounding margin.
UVA Wise will look to get back on the smiling side of the scoreboard at Newberry Saturday while completing a season-series sweep of the Wolves. Earlier this season, the Cavaliers claimed a 67-54 win over the Wolves behind a balanced scoring effort that saw five players reach double figures. That night, UVA Wise held Newberry to 4-of-28 shooting from the 3-point line while Nia Vanzant and Meg Crawford each recorded double-doubles in the win. Last time out, the Cavs were unable to hold a 16-point lead and fell to Lincoln Memorial 67-59 Wednesday. In defeat, senior Mackenzie King had a big night off the bench by sinking a quartet of 3-pointers. King's 3-point shooting aided an effort that saw UVA Wise make 9-of-21 shots from distance.
