WISE – Volleyball fell 3-1 (25-16, 25-10, 24-26, 25-13) in a league match against Carson-Newman Tuesday evening inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
Trailing early, UVA Wise (0-4, 0-4 SAC) used a 6-2 spurt to cut into the Eagles (4-0, 4-0 SAC) lead, 9-8, on a kill by junior Adison Minor to open the first set.
A service ace by freshman Bethany Smith snapped a Carson-Newman run later in the set as the Cavs trailed, 17-10. The Eagles maintained the advantage to take set one 25-16.
UVA Wise stayed on the heels of Carson-Newman early in the second set before a 5-0 run for the Eagles extended their lead to 10-4. Back-to-back blocks for Carson-Newman gave the Eagles a 15-7 advantage as UVA Wise called a timeout. The Eagles closed out the set with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 2-0 in the match.
Another kill by Minor put the Cavs up 5-1 early in the third set. UVA Wise gained its largest margin of the set on a kill by junior Matelyn Gibson as the Cavs pulled ahead 12-6. Four consecutive points in favor of the Eagles led to a UVA Wise timeout as Carson-Newman trailed 13-11. The Cavs never gave up the lead as the Eagles tried to climb from behind with Carson-Newman down 24-22 into another break. A Carson-Newman kill and Cavalier error knotted the set at 24-24, but consecutive points for UVA Wise gave the Cavs a 26-24 third set victory as the Eagles led the match 2-1.
The Cavs trailed the fourth set early with back-to-back kills by junior Kelsey Green and freshman Cassidy Farley pulling UVA Wise within five, 12-7. Carson-Newman held onto its advantage to end the set on top 25-13 as the Eagles posted a 3-1 win.
Minor collected a team-high 12 kills and added a service ace as redshirt junior Makayla Ledford tallied a team-best 31 assists to surpass 1,500 career assists and added two kills and a pair of assisted blocks.
Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad is back on the road this weekend for a match at Catawba College. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.
