Volleyball Falls to Wingate

WISE – Volleyball fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-13) to the Bulldogs of Wingate University Friday night inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.

Wingate (7-1, 7-1 SAC) won four straight points to pull out to a 6-2 lead in the first set before a Bulldog error snapped the streak. Wingate utilized another run to go ahead 13-4 as UVA Wise (0-5, 0-5 SAC) called its first timeout. The Bulldogs extended their margin to double-digits  before taking the first set, 25-10, to lead 1-0 in the match.

The two teams battled back and forth to start the second frame with a kill by senior Brooke Abbott knotting the set at 6-6. Three kills and a service pushed the Bulldogs to a 12-8 lead as UVA Wise took a timeout. The Cavs trailed by just four later in the set, but another run for Wingate put UVA Wise behind 21-12 as the Bulldog's took the second set 25-17 on a kill by Quin Sutphin.

Down 10-3 in the third set, UVA Wise used a service ace and pair of kills by Abbott and junior Matelyn Gibson to take three straight points and trail by four early, 10-6. A spurt for the Bulldogs increased the advantage to 20-9 on a trio of kills later in the set as Wingate held on for the 25-13 set win.

Gibson led the Cavs with seven kills while Abbott added five on the night. Redshirt-junior Makayla Ledford boasted a team-high 15 assists while also registering a team-best seven digs in the match.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's team will be back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. for Senior Day as the Cavs host Coker inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
