Volleyball Falls in Road Test at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – Volleyball fell on the road to Lenoir-Rhyne University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-16), Saturday afternoon inside Shuford Memorial Coliseum.

The Cavaliers (0-2, 0-2 SAC) and Bears (2-2, 2-2 SAC) went back-and-forth early in the opening set before Lenoir-Rhyne used a pair of kills and a service ace to go ahead 13-9. A Lenoir-Rhyne attack error put UVA Wise down by three before a 5-0 run for the Bears closed out the set as Lenoir-Rhyne took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 12-5 lead to start the second set before slowly gaining a double-digit advantage over the Cavs as the Bears held on to take set two 25-13.

Another hot start for the Bears to open the third set put Lenoir-Rhyne in front 13-4 early in the set. UVA Wise crawled from behind with a kill by senior Brooke Abbott and back-to-back attack errors for Lenoir-Rhyne cutting the deficit to five for the Cavs, 20-15, late in the set. The Bears used another run to end the final frame with four consecutive points for Lenoir-Rhyne giving the Bears a 25-16 third set win for the 3-0 victory.

Senior Madelyn Lawrence and freshman Cassidy Farley each posted a team-leading four kills while Lawrence registered a team-best .444 hitting percentage. Redshirt junior Makayla Ledford tallied 11 assists while she and junior Kelsey Green each recorded a solo block.

UVA Wise totaled three aces and 27 digs in the loss. Lenoir-Rhyne's Taylor Walton recorded a match-high 10 kills while the Bears Rachel Delcamp added a match-high four aces.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad will return to Wise for a conference match against Carson-Newman University Tuesday night. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
