Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Coker on Senior Day

WISE – UVA Wise dropped its conference match to Coker University on Senior Day inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center, 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-9) Saturday afternoon.

Back-to-back kills by Coker's Emily Everton pushed the Cobras out to a 5-3 lead over the Cavaliers (0-6, 0-6 SAC) early in the set. UVA Wise halted a scoring streak for the Cobras on a pair of kills for junior Matelyn Gibson and senior Madelyn Lawrence as the Cavs trailed 15-9. Coker finished the set winning the final four points to take the first, 25-14, and lead UVA Wise 1-0.

The two teams battled to start the second set with a kill by senior Brooke Abbott opening a 5-0 run for the Cavs to pull out 9-5 as the Cobras called a timeout. Coker slowly crawled back to tie the match at 18 apiece with four straight points in the Cobras favor. The set was tied once more as the Cavs attempted to come from behind, but Coker held on for a 25-22 set win for a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Coker took an early lead with a block in the third set, but five consecutive points for UVA Wise gave the Cavs a 5-1 edge to start. The Cobras managed to climb back to pull ahead 10-8 on a Lauren Loveday kill as UVA Wise took a timeout. Freshman' Cassidy Farley's kill and a Cobra error cut Coker's lead to 13-12 as the Cavs continued to rally. UVA Wise trailed by as many as four before a 5-1 run put the Cavs within one on a Rylee Waye service ace as the Cobras called a timeout. Trailing 23-22, a pair of errors and a service ace for freshman Evynne Stafford gave UVA Wise the set three victory, 25-23, as Coker still held a 2-1 lead.

Sophomore Meagan Blagg got the fourth set going on a kill assisted by redshirt junior Makayla Ledford. The Cavs struggled to get in rhythm after knotting the match 2-2 as Coker jumped out to a 13-2 lead into a UVA Wise timeout. The Cobras took the final set 25-9 as Coker won the match 3-1.

Junior Adison Minor led UVA Wise with nine kills, tallying four in the third set, while Farley notched a season-high eight kills. Waye posted a team-high three service aces as Abbott tallied a team-best five blocks. Ledford registered a team-leading 24 assists while Stafford led the Cavs with 23 digs.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's team will return to the Prior Center Tuesday evening for the Cavs final home match of the campaign against Lincoln Memorial University. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
