Cavs and Trojans Split Doubleheader

WISE - - Host UVA Wise and Anderson split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers won the opener 12-2 behind a complete game pitching performance from Jacob Stuart who earned his first collegiate mound win while the Trojans claimed an 18-7 win in the nightcap behind a pair of homers from Nick Vella.

Stuart put together the best start of the season for UVA Wise (3-17, 2-16 SAC) on the mound. The freshman from Galax, Va. scattered six hits while walking just one in an 82-pitch complete game, six inning effort.

Freshman Caleb Pritchard put an exclamation point on the win for the Cavs when his first collegiate homer was a walk off grand slam as it allowed Hank Banner's team to win the game via run-rule 12-2.

Pritchard's homer was the highlight of a big offensive day for UVA Wise. The Cavs lined 11 hits in the game, with Ethan Fletcher going 3-for-3 with a quartet of RBI. The outfielder had a pair of two-run doubles in the win while JoJo Kelliher, Tyler Campbell and Gavin Birkheimer had two hits each.

Anderson (10-12, 8-10 SAC) built an early two run lead as Chandler Castleberry scored on a run-scoring Brayden Owens base hit before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jacob Kohns built the guests a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

UVA Wise tied the game thanks to a sacrifice fly by Pritchard and an RBI single by Kelliher a half inning later.

The Cavs took the lead with a three-run third that featured one of Fletcher's two-run doubles.

Hank Banner's team played error free ball in the game, extending the streak to five consecutive games.

Game two featured seven extra-base hits by the Trojans. In addition to the two homers by Vella, Justin Fox also homered while Cody Adams, Castleberry, Davis Goodyear and Bryan Mitchell doubled.

Christian Carpenter came out of the bullpen to fire three innings of relief to earn his fourth save of the year. The hurler did not allow an earned run as he kept his ERA at 0.00 for the season.

The series is scheduled to be completed tomorrow, first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. from Saturday.
