Box Score 2 WISE - - UVA Wise and Coker split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader at Stallard Field Friday. The host Cavaliers won game one 8-4 as freshman right-hander Hunter Tensen earned his first collegiate mound win before the Cobras worked 10 walks while lining 16 hits in a 10-4 win in the nightcap.
UVA Wise (4-18, 3-17 SAC) struck for four runs in the home half of the first inning to stake Tensen to an early lead. Gabe Wurtz lined a two-run double while Caleb Pritchard registered a two-out, two-run single.
Coker (11-16, 10-11 SAC) played from behind the rest of the game. Tensen fanned the side in the second inning as part of a career-high five strikeout performance.
The Cobras cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third on a Riley Hall sacrifice fly; it would be as close as the visitors would get.
Hunter Meador highlighted a three-run third inning for Hank Banner's club with his first homer of the season, a two-run homer over the left field wall.
UVA Wise would tacked on an eighth run on a RBI double by Tyler Blaum while Kody Hanna and Hall each had a solo homer for Coker to provide the final margin of 8-4.
Tensen allowed four hits over five innings of work while allowing three runs, striking out five and walking six en route to his first collegiate win.
The Cavaliers lined 10 hits in the game, three coming from Blaum who finished 3-for-4. Wurtz picked up two RBI as did Meador and Pritchard.
Hanna picked up three of Coker's seven hits while Jackson Williams finished 2-for-3.
Game two saw plenty of offense from the start. The Cobras struck for five runs in their first trip to the plate, highlighted by a three-run homer by Hanna.
UVA Wise plated three runs of their own in the home half of the inning as Tyler Campbell lined a run-scoring double, Wurtz picked up a sacrifice fly in the inning with a third run scoring on an error.
The Cobras tacked on a single run each in the second and third inning to build a 7-3 lead before Gavin Birkimer singled home Campbell in the fourth to make it a 7-4 affair.
From there, Coker took control of the game as Hanna picked up a RBI single, Drew Klaserner belted a solo homer and Williams had a run-scoring single to post the 10-4 victory.
Blaum picked up two more hits in the loss but it was his defense that turned heads. The catcher threw out a would be base stealer in the opener while throwing a trio of would be stealers in the finale.
The Cobras picked up 16 hits in the win, Hanna went 4-for-6 with four RBI with Klasener and Williams tallying three hits each.
UVA Wise used 10 pitchers in the game as the group issued 10 walks while striking out six.
Jonathan Ford earned the win in relief for Coker as the he tossed four shutout innings of relief as he scattered three hits.
The doubleheader was played in unseasonably cold temperatures. Game time temperature was near freezing with wind gusts howling near 20 mph throughout the day.
The series is set to wrap up tomorrow with a doubleheader at Stallard Field tomorrow at 1 p.m.
