CHARLOTTE, N.C. – No. 19 Queens (NC) topped women's tennis 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Howard Levine Tennis Center. Juniors Katya Akimenko and Liza Akimenko earned a 6-0 sweep over the Royals Grace Forbes and Kate Halickman at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Junior Grace Hall and freshman Sarah Moore paired up for UVA Wise (2-9, 0-6 SAC) at No. 2 doubles as the duo fell 6-2 to the Royals (9-1, 8-1 SAC) Emma Hidalgo and Grace Sheldrick. Queens (NC) took No. 3 doubles by default to win the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles, Liza Akimenko was outlasted in a battle against Queens (NC) Viktorija Veselinova, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 while Katya Akimenko also fell short in a hard-fought match to Forbes, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4, at the No. 2 spot. Hall and junior Lillian Morris were swept at the No. 3 and No. 5 spot, respectively. Moore suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback at No. 4 as the Royals won by default at the No. 6 position.
Head coach Danny Rowland's team returns to Wise to face Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday afternoon. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Jim & Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
