WISE – UVA Wise dropped its conference match against Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday, 6-1, at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
LMU (6-5, 5-3 SAC) swept doubles to take an early lead over UVA Wise (2-10, 0-7 SAC). Juniors Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko paired up at No .1 as the duo were taken down, 6-2, by the Railsplitters' Valentina Ascarrunz and Kristin Vogel. At No. 2, juniors Grace Hall and Lillian Morris were topped, 6-1, by LMU's Amanda Dahlstrom and Mae Fitzgerald as the Railsplitters won No. 3 by default.
Liza Akimenko earned the Cavs sole victory of the day at No. 1 singles as she outlasted LMU's Julia Valls, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2, LMU's Ascarrunz defeated Katya Akimenko 8-3 while the Railsplitters Fitzgerald posted an 8-0 sweep over freshman Sarah Moore at the No. 4 spot. Hall and Morris were both swept, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, while LMU picked up another default win to take the match.
Head coach Danny Rowland's squad will be back in action Saturday at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex. The Cavs will host Coker at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. nonconference match against Mary Baldwin beginning at approximately 2 p.m.
