GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Jerko'ya Patton's 12-yard touchdown run with four seconds to play proved to be the difference as Limestone took down UVA Wise 30-24 at the Reservation Saturday evening. Patton's game-winning scamper capped a 151-yard rushing performance for the running back who toppled 100 yards for the second consecutive game.
UVA Wise (0-2, 0-2 SAC) tied the game at 24 with just over five minutes to play when Lendon Redwine hooked up with Caleb Martin on a 34-yard touchdown pass on a fourth down and four play.
The two schools would trade punts on the following two possessions setting Limestone (1-1, 1-0 SAC) up with the ball at the UVA Wise 45-yard line with just under two minutes to play.
Quarterback Dustin Noller would make two big plays on the game-ending drive, one with his legs and one with his arm. The signal caller converted a third down and one by rushing for 13 yards before firing a 13-yard strike to Juwan Scott to get the Saints inside the Cavaliers' 15-yard line.
The connection to Scott set up Patton's 12-yard run with just four ticks remaining. UVA Wise would attempt a pass on the final play of the game but it would fall incomplete just beyond the 50-yard line.
Dane Damron's team built an early double-digit lead in the contest. UVA Wise led 14-3 in the second quarter behind a Redwine touchdown pass to Jamal Fisher and a touchdown run by Shaheim Revel.
The Cavs would be unable to make the lead to stick as the Saints received a 26-yard field goal by Nathan Baker and a touchdown pass from Noller to Scott to make it a 14-12 game late in the first half. Limestone tied the game Kyleik Middleton converted the two-point conversion try to send the game to intermission tied at 14.
The Saints controlled the third quarter as Baker booted a pair of field goals and Patton scored from four yards out to put the hosts in front 24-14.
A field goal off the foot of Drew Cassidy cut the lead to seven as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Penalties played a big role in the contest. UVA Wise was penalized 14 times for 110 yards while Limestone was assessed 10 penalties for 90 yards.
Chavon Fields led the defensive effort for the Cavs as the defensive lineman tallied seven tackles while picking off a pass. Joel Burgess and Erik Howard also had seven stops for the guests.
Garrett Cropp completed 17-of-25 pass attempts for 107 yards while Redwine was 12-for-17 with 110 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. UVA Wise did not commit a turnover in the game.
Martin caught eight passes for 66 yards, in addition to his touchdown reception.
On the ground, four Cavs had at least 25 rushing yards, Jacoby Johnson led the quartet with seven carries for 48 yards.
As a team, Limestone finished with 206 rushing yards as part of a 452-yard offensive output. UVA Wise tallied 368 yards, but lost the time of possession by nearly 10 minutes (34:19-to-25:41).
