WISE - - It had been 484 days since UVA Wise had played a football game, the return to the gridiron did not lack disappoint as Carson-Newman outlasted UVA Wise 40-37 in quadrupole overtime at Smith Stadium Saturday.

Christian Erwin's field goal ended Saturday's marathon as the Carson-Newman (1-0, 1-0 SAC) kicker connected on a 43-yard field goal. It was his fourth made field goal of the game and his third made field goal of overtime.

UVA Wise (0-1, 0-1 SAC) built a 24-14 lead with 13:28 to play in the fourth quarter when Garrett Cropp capped a 96-yard scoring drive with a 25-yard touchdown scamper. It was the longest rush of the day for the Cavalier quarterback who completed 31-of-51 passes for 310 yards and a touchdown.

After an Eagles punt, Dane Damron's team would be on the cusp of seemingly putting the game out of reach as the hosts moved the ball from the UVA Wise 15-yard line to the Carson-Newman 19-yard line. Cropp would complete a pass, but the Eagles would strip the receiver, causing a fumble, recovering it at their own 11-yard line.

After a Cavalier punt, Mitchell burnt UVA Wise through the air again. The signal caller hooked up with JJ Lewis for a 57-yard touchdown pass giving the visitors a 28-24 advantage with 3:42 remaining.

Trailing 31-28, Carson-Newman took possession of the football with 1:17 to play on the fourth quarter clock. Mitchell would guide the offense to the UVA Wise 32-yard line before Erwin booted a game-tying field goal to force overtime.

Erwin and Drew Cassidy would trade field goals in the first extra session to force double overtime.

In the second overtime, the Eagles would get a stop on a fourth down play, meaning the visitors would need just a field goal to win the game.

However, Erwin would miss a 35-yard field goal wide left which would send the game to triple overtime.

In the third overtime, Erwin would boot a 36-yard field goal and Cassidy would drill a 26-yard field goal to force the fourth overtime, making it the longest game in UVA Wise football history.

UVA Wise would be unable to move the ball and would eventually miss a 42-yard field goal, once again giving Carson-Newman an opportunity to win the game.

This time, Mike Clowney's team would seize the chance as Erwin would end the game with the aforementioned 43-yard field goal.

The win was the first of Clowney's coaching career who served as a longtime assistant at Carson-Newman. The Eagles allowed 562 yards of total offense but were able to pass for 309 yards in the triumph.
