Blaum Goes 5-for-5 in Doubleheader Loss to Bears

WISE - - Visiting Lenoir-Rhyne belted 12 homers en route to a doubleheader sweep over UVA Wise at Stallard Field Saturday evening. The homerun surplus by the Bears overshadowed a 5-for-5 day by Cavalier senior catcher who reached base safely in every at bat in the finale, including his first homer of the season.

Lenoir-Rhyne (9-6, 6-4 SAC) belted six homers in the opener, including two by shortstop Xander Ferlenda as the visitors rolled to a 15-2 triumph.

UVA Wise (1-11, 0-10 SAC) received an RBI double by Gabe Wurtz and a run-scoring double by Ethan Fletcher to account for their only two runs in the contest.

The Bears were led by Ferlanda who finished 3-for-3 with six RBI in the win while Wade Cuda added a trio of hits and a pair of runs scored.

On the hill, Alex Shirzai improved to 2-1 as he fanned 10 in a complete game, five-inning effort. The right-hander scattered six hits and walked three as he won his second game of the year.

Game two featured Blaum's 5-for-5 performance at the plate, but Lenoir-Rhyne lined 25 hits with six of the hits going over the fence.

Drue Galassai lined a two-run homer to get the scoring going as the Bears built a three-run lead as the guests never looked back in completing the sweep.

Blaum's first homer of the year, was a two-run shot that cut the deficit to 3-2 in the third.

From there, Lenoir-Rhyne would score six consecutive runs to put the game out of reach.

Nine Bears had multiple hits in the game two win, including EJ Ranel who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and a homer.

Tanner Moyers earned the mound win. The right-hander fanned eight over five innings of work as he allowed four runs (two earned) in improving to 1-1 on the season.

The series wraps up tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader from Stallard Field.
