CAVS LOOK TO STAY HOT AGAINST WOLVES

Storylines – vs Newberry

Newberry will look to halt a three-game losing skid when the Wolves visit the Prior Center Wednesday. Third-year coach Joanna Tincher's squad has been outscored by 43 points during the skid, including a 72-60 setback at home to Anderson Saturday. Turnovers have come in bunches for Newberry thus far. Through six games, the Wolves turn it over more than any other school in the South Atlantic Conference at 23.2 times per night. The empty possessions have held down Newberry's scoring to a total of 54.8 points per game. The Wolves have been effective on the glass, recording 16.2 offensive rebounds per night led by Mylaysia Gates' 2.7 offensive boards a contest. Gates has been the team's most productive player to date averaging 8.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Payton Cronen is the team's leading scorer at nine points a night behind a team-leading 14 made 3-pointers.

About UVA Wise

The Cavaliers have won back-to-back games and a big reason why has been the play of reigning SAC Player of the Week Nia Vanzant. The junior guard scorched the nets last week, converting 67.9 percent of her field goal attempts en route to averaging 24.5 points per game. On the season, Vanzant leads the league and ranks fifth in NCAA Division II in 3-point field goal percentage (.600) while her overall field goal percentage (.567) also is tops in the SAC. Sixth-year senior Kalee Johnson continues to move up the school's all-time scoring leaderboard. Last time out, Johnson netted 19 points to surpass former teammate Cynita Webb and Diane Arrington on the school's scoring list. Johnson now ranks 16th in school history with 1,067 points. Redshirt senior Meg Crawford has been having a block party inside the Prior Center. The 6-foot-3 center blocked four shots in a 69-62 win over Tusculum Saturday after blocking six shots in a home-opening 77-70 triumph over Mars Hill. The consecutive home wins continue a strong stretch of play at home for Jamie Cluesman's squad. Dating back to the start of the 2019-2020 campaign, UVA Wise has posted a 19-8 record inside the Prior Center. A year ago, the Cavs scored a 79-64 win at home over Newberry behind a 25-point, 16-rebound outing from Johnson.
