ROCK HILL, S.C. - - UVA Wise junior guard Nia Vanzant has been named the South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Women's Basketball Player of the Week. The 5-foot-7 guard powered the Cavaliers to a pair of SAC wins last week as she netted a season-high 27 points in a 77-70 win over Mars Hill before sinking 8-of-12 field goal attempts en route to 22 points in a 69-62 win over Tusculum.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native has scored in double figures in each of the season's first six games while averaging a team-leading 18.2 points per game. Vanzant leads the SAC in field goal percentage (.567) and 3-point field goal percentage (.600). Her 3-point field goal percentage ranks fifth in NCAA Division II and is the highest shooting percentage from beyond the arc by any woman in the Southeast Region.

For the week, Vanzant averaged 24.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 67.9 percent from the field.

The SAC Player of the Week honor is the first of the season by a Cavalier and marks the second time that Vanzant has won the award in her career.

UVA Wise is in the midst of a two-game winning streak; the team returns to the floor Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. when Newberry visits the Prior Center.
