Slow Starting Cavs Fall To Wolves

WISE - - Newberry outgained UVA Wise 474-to-262 as the Wolves walked away from Carl Smith Stadium with a 37-14 South Atlantic Conference win Saturday afternoon.

Wide receiver Bryson Woodruff continued his strong season as the Coastal Carolina transfer caught two of quarterback Dre Harris' four touchdown passes as part of a five-catch, 113 receiving yard day to lead Newberry (4-2, 3-1 SAC).

UVA Wise (3-3, 2-2 SAC) played from behind all afternoon. The Wolves jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a pair of Woodruff touchdown receptions as the guests limited the Cavaliers to just three first quarter yards.

Harris' third touchdown pass of the day was an 11-yard strike to Cade Ruff at the 14:21 mark of the second quarter to put Newberry in front 20-0. UVA Wise would get on the board with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Lendon Redwine to J'Quan Anderson with 12:58 to play in the opening half.

Avery Funderburk booted a 39-yard field goal with 46 ticks to play in the opening half to send the Wolves to the locker room with a 23-7 advantage.

Newberry essentially put the game out of reach with 10:14 to play in the third quarter when Bobby Irby hauled in a 17-yard touchdown reception; the conversion kick made it 30-7 in favor of the guests.

Addison Ironside would grab the first touchdown reception of his collegiate career with 9:48 to play in the third to make it 30-14 only to see Harris post a 6-yard touchdown scamper to provide the final margin of 37-14.

Overall, Harris completed 14-of-23 passes for 264 yards while rushing for another 25 yards. Irby recorded four receptions for 76 yards while Mario Anderson gained 98 yards on 22 carries to pace the Wolves' offense.

Redwine was 18-for-30 for 157 yards and two touchdown passes for UVA Wise. Jahlil Jefferson rushed for 68 yards on two carries and Anderson added 63 yards on 12 carries. Devin Heckstall was the team's leading receiver with four catches for 68 yards.

Markel Dailey and Chavon Fields tied for game-high tackle honors with nine each in defeat.

Next week, UVA Wise travels to Tusculum University to face the Pioneers in a 1:30 p.m. kick.
