UVA Wise Drops Road Game At Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - Tusculum amassed 539 yards of total offense, 380 of which came through the air as the Pioneers scored a 37-21 over UVA Wise at Pioneer Field Saturday.

Tusculum (3-4, 2-3 SAC) used a 20-point third quarter to overcome a 14-6 deficit to take control of the game. The big blow came with 31 seconds to play in the opening half when wide receiver Derrick Wright beat the UVA Wise (3-4, 2-3 SAC) defense for a 68-yard touchdown.

The touchdown pass was one of four touchdown passes thrown by Pioneers' signal caller Ivan Corbin in the win. Corbin finished the day 29-of-52 for 378 yards, his favorite target was Wright who hauled in eight catches for 141 yards and the touchdown.

The Cavaliers had taken an early lead thanks to a pair of touchdown runs. Jackoby Johnson scored a 1-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive for the first points of the day before Jaevon Gillespie's 6-yard touchdown scamper put the visitors in front 14-6.

Trailing 20-14 to begin the third quarter, UVA Wise struggled to find much offense. The Cavs first three drives of the second half would result in punts without gaining a first down.

With Tusculum's defense performing well, the Pioneers offense took advantage with a 7-play, 42-yard drive that culminated in a 31-yard field goal from J.A. Pittman to push the lead to 23-14.

A 12-yard touchdown pass from Lendon Redwine to Darrien Newton with 49 seconds to play in the third quarter would cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive to get UVA Wise within two at 23-21.

It would be as close as Dane Damron's team would get as a 4-yard touchdown pass from Corbin to Justice Parham with 5:05 to play and a 4-yard touchdown run by Cortney Jackson with under a minute to play provided the final margin of 37-21.

The Pioneers held the guests to 17 rushing yards on 25 carries while rushing for 159 yards of their own. Backup quarterback Tre Simmons had the longest rush of the day, a 65-yard burst with just over a minute remaining to seal the deal.

Devin Heckstall had a big day in the loss for UVA Wise. The senior wide receiver caught six passes for 92 yards while teammate Newton caught six passes for 57 yards and the touchdown.

Defensively, Robert Carter picked off a pair of passes for the Cavs, Trevor Morris, Veronta Jones and Gavin Ransaw added one sack each.

UVA Wise was limited to 5-of-18 on third downs while Tusculum converted 10-of-18 third down chances.

The day was chalk full of penalties by both schools. Tusculum was assessed 12 penalties for 113 yards with UVA Wise being charged with eight penalties that tallied 85 yards.

Next week, the Cavs return home to face SAC leader and nationally ranked Wingate. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. from Carl Smith Stadium.
