WISE — The UVA Wise Cavaliers volleyball team received a tough blow from the Queens University of Charlotte (UC) Royals in a 3-0 defeat on Friday night, by scores of 25-20, 25-17, and 25-14.
The UVA Wise Cavaliers (4-12, 0-9 SAC) held their ground against the Queens UC Royals (9-6, 4-2 SAC) in the first set, with seven of the first nine points in the game belonging to the Cavs — by the help of few Adison Minor and Morgan Blevins kills. The Cavs struggled to keep their lead though, as Queens profited off of kills by Kayla McDuffie and Grace Giunta and took advantage of Cavalier missteps. Towards the end of the set, the Royals found themselves in a tie ballgame at 18 each. The Cavaliers fought back with the help of a kill by Kaylee Scarce, but the Royals scored the final four points of the game and took the win 25-20.
In the second set, the Royals and the Cavs battled neck-and-neck until the 15th point. Once the Royals hit 15 points, Lindsay Elmore took the wheel. Of the last nine points the Royals scored, Elmore accounted for three kills and two service aces to win the match by a score of 25-17.
In the final set, Minor scored two back-to-back kills to give the Cavs an extra boost to start them off. Queens responded with a Brooke Farley kill and took the lead fast, trucking through the set with the help of Guinta as the Royals' main weapon. Queens won the match and kept the Cavs to 14 points.
From Wise's side, Minor led the night in kills with 12. Rylee Waye was able to snag 12 assists in the match, and Cana Davidson ended the night with a leading 18 digs.
The Cavs are back at home tomorrow against another SAC competitor, the Catawba Indians, at 6:00 p.m.Â
