Box Score PORTSMOUTH, OH — The UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers men's tennis team squeezed out a win against the Shawnee State University Bears, winning 4-3.
Starting off singles play was Cavalier Jake Ferner, who was outscored by opponent Duarte Melo by scores of 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 2 spot, Dominic Hoffman lost his first set to Zayden Rinehart 6-2, but then came back to win the next set 6-4. In a tiebreaker, Hoffman secured the win by a score of 10-7. In No. 3 singles play, the Bears battled back and their own Jacob Freeland outscored Cavalier Coleton Burke 7-6, 6-2. The Bears also took hold of Luke Jarnigan as their player Keenow Lambert secured a win (6-1, 2-6, 10-5). John Robert Kilgore and Dylan Galenski came up big in the No. 5 and No. 6 spot as they defeated their opponents to even the singles scores out 3-3.
In doubles play, duo Ferner and Hoffman outscored the Bears duo Rineheart and Melo by a score of 6-4. Burke and Jarnigan were also able to snag a win, shutting out White and Brown 6-0. In No. 3, the Bears were able to secure a win as their Freeland and Lambert duo drove past Kilgore and Galenksi with a score of 6-2.
Overall, the Cavs were able to squeeze out a 4-3 win, putting them at a 4-2 record on the fall season.
