No. 18 Wingate Knocks Off UVA Wise

WISE - - No. 18 Wingate held UVA Wise to negative 12 rushing yards as the Bulldogs posted a 48-21 South Atlantic Conference victory at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday. Quarterback Shawn Crocker passed for four touchdowns in the win as Wingate held a 400-to-290 advantage in total yardage.

UVA Wise (3-5, 2-4 SAC) held a 6-3 lead with 4:49 to play in the first quarter when Lendon Redwine hooked up with Darrien Newton on a 21-yard touchdown pass. It precluded a day of issues for the Cavs' special teams unit.

Wingate (6-1, 4-0 SAC) would block the ensuing point after attempt to keep the lead at just a field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Bulldogs' returner Corey Siemer fielded the ball at his own 23-yard line and returned it 18 yards to the 41-yard line.

Two plays later, Crocker hooked up with R.J. Mobley for a 47-yard touchdown pass to put Wingate back in front.

The special teams nightmare would continue for UVA Wise on the following possession. After a three-and-out, the Cavs sent out the punting unit only to see the snap sail over punter Drew Vermillion's head. The Bulldogs would fall on the ball in the end zone to put the visitors in front 17-6 following the conversion kick.

UVA Wise would get back within four points at 17-13 when Redwine found Devin Heckstall for a 60-yard touchdown pass. It was one reception that was part of a big day for Heckstall. The Baltimore native finished with four catches for a season-high 142 yards.

The score would remain unchanged until midway through the second quarter. UVA Wise appeared to have Wingate stopped as the Bulldogs were on the field to punt. Wingate would get a second life as the hosts would be assessed a 15-yard penalty for leaping on the punt attempt.

Wingate's new found life would lead to six as Crocker would find Ryder Martin on a 20-yard touchdown connection to push the lead to 24-13.

After an empty possession by the Cavs, the Bulldogs essentially put the game out of reach on the final drive of the first half. Crocker capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown connection to Nijere Peoples to send Wingate to the locker room with a 31-13 advantage.

The second half was all Bulldogs as Crocker hit Ra'Quan Simmons with a 22-yard touchdown pass, McLean Robertson booted a 44-yard field goal and Myles Dillon had a 16-yard touchdown run for Wingate.

UVA Wise's lone second half score came with 4:35 to play when Tyler O'Reilly came off the bench and found JJ McNeill III for a 2-yard touchdown pass.

In addition to Heckstall, Keishoen Jarrett had a big day receiving. The tight end hauled in a game-high six receptions for 37 yards.

The special teams play and inability to run the ball proved to be too much to overcome. The Cavs had 28 carries for negative 12 yards compared to a 171-rushing yard performance by the Bulldogs.

People finished with 91 rushing yards and 34 receiving yards while Mobley had a team-high 81 receiving yards.

Jaquan Edwards paced Wingate with 10 tackles to join UVA Wise's Daquan Battle with 10 tackles for game-high tackle honors.

UVA Wise turned it over three times in the game and surrendered eight stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Next week, the Cavs will be on the road to face the Saints of Limestone. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. from The Reservation in Gaffney, S.C.
