GAFFNEY, S.C. - - UVA Wise came up with a fourth down stop with under a minute to play to hold off Limestone 28-24 in South Atlantic Conference football action at The Reservation Saturday afternoon. The win halted a three-game losing skid for the Cavaliers as Dane Damron's team has now doubled its win total, at four, from its first season in the SAC.
UVA Wise (4-5, 3-4 SAC) used a strong defensive effort to be in position to win. Limestone (0-7, 0-5 SAC) passed for just 145 yards and were held to a 2-of-16 showing on third down.
No stop for the Cavs defense was bigger than at the end of the game. Limestone was faced with a fourth down and six play from the UVA Wise 23-yard line with under 30 seconds remaining. On the play, Austin Hicks would pressure quarterback Ethan Beamish and Deandre Williams would bat away the pass to prevent a conversion. With the Saints out of timeouts, the play sealed the road triumph.
It was one of many stops for the defense. On five red zone trips, Limestone scored just two touchdowns and a total of 17 points. The Cavs also generated good field position for the offense by forcing countless three-and-outs in the game.
In a game that saw six lead changes, it would be UVA Wise that captured the lead last. Trailing 24-21 with 8:19 to play. Lendon Redwine hooked up with Markel Harrison on a completion, the wide receiver would make several nifty moves before turning toward the sideline and outracing the Limestone defense for what proved to be the decisive score.
It was one of three touchdown passes on the day for Redwine. The signal caller also tossed touchdowns to JJ McNeil III and Devin Heckstall. McNeil finished the game with seven catches for 109 yards while Heckstall finished with 54 yards on three catches.
The Saints led 10-7 at intermission behind a Jerk'oya Patton touchdown reception and a Nathan Baker field goal.
The second half featured far more offense. Jaevon Gillespie capped a 42-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge for UVA Wise to put the visitors in front 14-10 late in the third quarter only to see Patton bust free for a 75-yard touchdown run for Limestone on the next offensive play.
The final period saw McNeil beat the defense for a 47-yard touchdown, a Beamish 1-yard touchdown rush and Harrison's game-winning score.
The Cavs had one of their betting rushing performances of the season. Gillespie finished with 110 yards on the ground to spearhead a 130-yard rushing effort.
Michael King led UVA Wise with nine tackles, Chavon Fields added eight stops and Job Whalen snatched an interception.
Patton eclipsed 3,000 career rushing yards by virtue of his 16-carry, 105-yard day on the ground.
Next up, the Cavs are back on the road to face the Catawba Indians next Saturday. Kickoff from Salisbury, N.C. is slated for 1 p.m.
