CAVS FALL IN THREE TO BULLDOGS

The UVA Wise Cavaliers failed to secure a win in tonight's match versus the Wingate University Bulldogs, losing 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-11).

Starting off the first set, the Cavs received a freebie point from the Bulldogs with an attack error from Quin Sutphin. The Bulldogs were able to snag the point back though as the Cavs suffered a serving error. The Bulldogs took this as a sign to close in on the Cavs, with the trio of Sophie Schaff, Maggie Young, and Marianna Warren producing major kills to take the lead 8-4. A kill from Cavalier Dannah Persinger stopped the Bulldog's roll, but Wingate gained the momentum back soon after with three unanswered points. From there, Wingate took control of the set and went on to win 25-18.

In the second set, Wingate started their effort with three unanswered points consisting of an attack error, a ball-handling error, and a kill by Reese Blackley. UVA Wise answered right on the spot with three consecutive points consisting of a Cassidy Farley kill and two Wingate errors. The teams exchanged points back-to-back until the 13th point, when Wingate went on a five-point run led by yet another Blackley kill. With the score 18-14, the Cavs produced a three-point run response led by a major Morgan Blevins kill. The Cavs let a few points slip with attack errors, but the game was well within reach due to a kill from Adison Minor and Persinger to get the Cavs within one point. But, a few attack errors sealed the deal for the Cavs as Wingate held onto the win, 25-22.

In the final set, Wingate came to dominate as they generated five consecutive points right off the bat. Farley snagged a point with a kill, but Wingate proved their consistency with another four-point run later in the match to get a 10-point lead. Wingate has solidified the win from then on, only letting the Cavs score a total of 11 points.

Leaders of the night were Minor of the Cavs with eight kills, Taryn Price of the Bulldogs with three aces and 18 digs, and Shannon Kasprak of the Bulldogs with 19 assists.

Next, the Cavs take on the Coker Cobras tomorrow, Oct. 16 at noon in the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
