Coker has won back-to-back games and enters Saturday's home tilt with UVA Wise playing its best ball of the season under first-year coach Melissa Devore. Ahlea Myers has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Cobras offense. Thus far, the Charleston Southern transfer is averaging a team-high 12.9 points per game but it's been the play of late by Myers that spurred the winning streak. The guard netted 24 points in the team's 94-90 win over Newberry Monday before tallying 21 points in Wednesday's 83-78 win over Limestone. A big reason for her recent offensive outburst has been the 3-point line. Myers has made a combined six 3-pointers in the last two games after making just one in the previous three games combined. When the two schools met in Wise in November, Myers made seven shots from beyond the arc en route to a season-high 25 points. A key to defeating Coker may be keeping the Cobras off the foul line. DeVore's squad leads the nation in free throw attempts (200) and ranks second in makes (125).
Following Wednesday's 28 assist performance, UVA Wise now leads all of NCAA Division II in assists per game at 20.8. Many Cavaliers have been willing to lend a helping hand but, the top assist woman is sophomore Caitlyn Ross who leads the SAC and ranks fifth nationally in assists per game at 6.8. Ross dished out a career-best 13 assists Wednesday and has tallied 27 through four games. Senior guard Hanna Oliver was the recipient of many of those assists as she tied a school record with eight made 3-pointers en route to a career-best 26 points. Nia Vanzant made a career-high 11 field goals as part of a season-high 25-point showing while Kalee Johnson cracked double figures for the third consecutive game with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Earlier this season, UVA Wise saw six players score in double-figures led by Meg Crawford who tallied 15 points and blocked four shots in an 87-81 win over Coker. A player to watch Saturday is Vanzant. In three career games against the Cobras, the guard is averaging 19.7 points per game. Vanzant scorched Coker for 25 points in last year's game in Hartsville. A win would give the Cavaliers their second four-game winning streak in as many years and it would ironically also be the second consecutive season it took place in the season's first five games. Following the game with Coker, UVA Wise is set to play four straight inside the Prior Center.
