Newberry enters Wednesday's game at UVA Wise having won two of its last three games. The Wolves bring one of the league's top shot blockers to Wise in Ericka Wiseley. The 6-foot-2 forward has blocked the most shots in the conference (18) and trails only UVA Wise's Meg Crawford in blocked shots per game. Third-year coach Joanna Tincher's squad is a proponent of the 3-point shot; Newberry ranks second in the conference in 3-point field goals attempted (212) and made (73) this season. The Wolves have a pair of long range shooters in Payton Cronen and Courtney Virgo. Each woman is averaging a team-best 10.7 points per game while Cronent has made 26 shots from beyond the arc and Virgo has connected on 25 triples. Per game, Newberry is making 8.1 3-pointers; the number is boosted by a game in which the Wolves mad 17 shots from distance in a 94-90 setback to Coker. That night, Cronen and Virgo combined to go 17-for-36 from the 3-point line. Keli Romas could be a player to watch, she finished with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in Newberry's 85-68 win over UVA Wise the last time the two schools met.
Behind the play of Caitlyn Ross and Meg Crawford, UVA Wise pushed its winning streak to five with a 70-63 win over Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday. Ross finished with a game-high 18 points while Crawford recorded a double-double with 15 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. Kalee Johnson continued her strong play as well, the redshirt senior scored her team's first seven points en route to a 17-point showing that included a season-high five assists. Crawford's big night on the glass helped her team win the battle of the boards 46-to-37. In addition to Crawford, Nia Vanzant also had a big rebounding performance. The guard grabbed a career-high eight rebounds while adding 14 points in the win. Free throw shooting played a big role Wednesday, UVA Wise finished the game 19-for-22 from the foul line and is now shooting a league-leading 77.1 percent from the line this season. Two milestones were reached Wednesday, Vanzant recorded her 500th career point in just her 34th career game while Ross handed out her 200th assist in her 34th career game. Jamie Cluesman's team is receiving votes in the D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll and currently sits a game back of three undefeated teams in the SAC Standings. A win over Newberry would match UVA Wise's best start to a season since joining NCAA Division II; the 2016-2017 Cavaliers began the year 6-1 en route to a 21-win season.
