WISE - - On a night Greg Duncan became the third player in school history to reach 200 career strikeouts while eclipsing the career mark for innings pitched, it was the visiting No. 16 Newberry Wolves who scored a pair of wins as the visitors swept a doubleheader by scores of 16-7 and 13-3 at Stallard Field.
Big innings were the story of the day for Newberry (17-4, 6-2 SAC) as the Wolves scored six runs in the fourth inning of game one and four runs in the ninth inning to roll to the nine-run victory before a nine-run seventh inning propelled the club to the win in the night cap.
UVA Wise (10-9, 3-5) held a 6-4 after three innings of play in game one thanks to a pair of three-run homers off the bats of Ethan Fletcher and Dawson Cagle.
The Wolves bounced back with the six-run fifth inning as the reigning SAC champions scored six runs on six hits in the fourth inning to take command of the contest.
Newberry lined 24 hits in the win, including five from Jack Harris who went 5-for-6 while catcher Kenny Bergmann knocked in a trio of runs in game one.
Game two was a 4-3 game going to the top of the seventh until the Wolves struck for nine runs in their final trip to the plate to bust the game open.
Duncan allowed four runs (two earned) while striking out eight en route to his 200 career strikeout. The two unearned runs sent Duncan's to his first loss of the year, he is now 3-1 on the mound.
UVA Wise picked up seven hits in the win, including Gabe Wurtz who went 2-for-2 with two runs in the loss.
Nick Butler and Jack Harris had three hits each in the win as Newberry tallied 19 hits in the game two victory.
The series wraps up tomorrow at 1 p.m.
