WISE - - Bret Roberts walk off double in the bottom of the ninth capped a 10-9 slugfest win for UVA Wise Wednesday as the Cavaliers knocked off local rive King University in non-conference baseball action at Stallard Field.
Roberts' game-winning double was part of a day that saw UVA Wise (11-1) pound out 16 hits while scoring in six of the game's nine innings.
King (15-9) tied the game at 9-9 on an error in the top of the eighth inning before threatening to take its first lead since the fifth inning in the ninth inning.
Shortstop Jarret Backus doubled to lead off the ninth for the Tornado. With the go-ahead run in scoring position, Cavaliers' reliever Ethan Fletcher went to work as he induced back-to-back fly outs before getting a groundout to end the threat.
In the home ninth, senior Matthew Branham worked a walk on a 3-2 count with one out in the inning before Fletcher's infield hit put the winning run in scoring position.
In stepped Roberts who lined a 2-1 pitch to right centerfield for the game-winning hit.
It was a career day for Fletcher who finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with a homer, a run scored and four RBI while also earning the mound win.
Branham and freshman Hunter Meador each lined three hits in the triumph while Gabe Wurtz went 2-for-5.
UVA Wise hit three homers in the game; in addition to Fletcher's blast, Dawson Cagle and Tyler Campbell also homered.
Hank Banner's team will return to league play this weekend when the team visits Carson-Newman for a three game series beginning Friday.
