Storylines – vs COKER UNIVERSITY
When Coker comes to town Saturday, there will be little doubt as to who the best basketball player in the gym will be. Cobras' Head Coach Shannon Johnson was a four-time WNBA All-Star, an Olympic Gold medalist and a four-time All-SEC pick at South Carolina during her playing days. This season, her team is in the midst of a four-game losing streak and has not won a league game since knocking off Mars Hill 74-66 at home on Dec. 7. The club is led by the sophomore duo of Ashauntee Nelson and Saquita Joyner. Nelson leads the team with 10.6 points per game while Joyner is netting 10.2 points a night while making 54.2 percent of her field goal attempts. Defense has been an issue for Johnson's club as teams are making 42 percent of field goal attempts against Coker while averaging 69.6 points per game. The field goal percentage defense ranks 11th in the South Atlantic Conference and 243rd nationally while the scoring defense is 10th in the conference and 222nd nationally.
UVA Wise will attempt to halt a three-game losing streak when Coker visits the Prior Center Saturday. In the team's two most recent losses, the fourth quarter has been problematic as Jamie Cluesman's team has been unable to hold a pair of late game leads. Depth has been an issue for the Cavaliers, playing just six players in each of the last two games. While UVA Wise is playing short-handed, the team has received superb play by the individuals who are playing. Over the last two games, freshman Caitlyn Ross is averaging 11.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while fellow freshman Nia Vanzant is 16 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game over the stretch. In Wednesday's 68-64 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, senior Cynita Webb recorded her 12th double-double of the season as she scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. It marked the seventh consecutive game in which the forward posted a double-double. Over that seven game period, the 5-foot-11 Webb is averaging 16.9 points and 14.1 rebounds a game. The senior will have a chance to reach another milestone Saturday. She enters the game 14 points shy of reaching 16th place on the school's all-time scoring list. Her 1,044 career points currently sits 13 points behind former Cav great Diane Arrington's 1,057 points. With the team's injury problems, freshman forward Leah Kestner has received more playing time. Kestner has scored and grabbed multiple rebounds in five consecutive contests. Following the game, UVA Wise will play three straight away from home beginning Wednesday at Carson-Newman.
