PEMBROKE, N.C. - - Volleyball posted a 1-1 record Sunday afternoon at the UNC Pembroke Invitational as the Cavs picked up a win in the season opener against Fayetteville State University, 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-11). UVa-Wise fell in straight sets in the second match of the day against host institution UNC Pembroke, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22).

UVa-Wise (1-1) started the season with an exciting five-set match against the Broncos. The Cavs outlasted FSU, 25-23, in the first set before the Broncos rallied to take set two, 25-20, to tie the match early.

Fayetteville State (0-3) dropped the third set to the Cavs, 25-21, but topped the Cavs in the fourth set, 25-17, to send the game into a fifth set.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad sealed the win with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set while registering a .444 attack percentage. Sophomore Kelsey Green led the charge for the Cavs with a team-high 13 kills while senior Ciara Kain finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs.

Sophomore Matelyn Gibson accumulated 10 kills while junior Brooke Abbott was close behind with nine kills and an impressive .467 attack percentage in the match. Senior Briana Kerr posted a match-high 17 digs with fellow senior Morgan Milligan recording 10 digs in the match. Milligan led the team with 20 assists while Kerr and junior Makayla Ledford added 10 assists apiece.

The Cavaliers fell in straight sets to the Braves (2-2) in the second match of the day. UVa-Wise was led by Gibson in kills with nine while Kain posted eight kills and Green totaled six kills against UNCP. Milligan registered a team-high 15 digs followed by Ledford who recorded eight digs in the match. Ledford also led the Cavs with 27 assists.

UVa-Wise returns to action this weekend with a conference-opening road match at Carson-Newman Friday at 7 p.m. The Cavs return to Wise for their home opener Saturday afternoon taking the court against Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m. inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
