Volleyball Hosts Catawba, Queens (N.C.) This Weekend

WISE – Head Coach Kristen Salyer's team returns to the court for a pair of matches inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center this weekend. The Cavaliers will face Catawba College Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on the Royals of Queens (N.C.) Saturday at 2 p.m.

About UVa-Wise

- Coach Salyer's team will look to halt a losing streak this weekend inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center with a pair of matches against Catawba and Queens (N.C.). UVa-Wise fell short in tough battles over the last three matches, dropping two conference matches at home before being tripped up in a non-conference road test.

- Sophomore Matelyn Gibson currently leads the Cavs with 75 kills closely followed by redshirt senior Ciara Kain who has posted 72 kills and averaging a team-high 2.67 kills per set.

- Junior Brooke Abbott's .200 attack percentage leads UVa-Wise while she has added 55 kills so far this campaign. Senior Morgan Milligan also leads the Cavs with 156 digs with senior Briana Kerr close behind totaling 90 digs so far this season.

- Gibson posted a career-high 16 kills against Mars Hill this past weekend, recording her first career double-double alongside15 digs. Abbott has recorded an attack percentage of .300 or better in each of her last four matches and has notched a team-high 19 total blocks. Sophomore Abigail Byington also posted her career-high 13 kills and .400 attack percentage against Mars Hill this past weekend with a total of 33 kills to date this season.

- UVa-Wise will stay at home for a non-conference midweek tilt against Concord University at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. Coach Salyer's team will then travel to South Carolina for matches next weekend at Newberry and Anderson (S.C.).

Notes on Catawba College

- In his first season with the team, head coach Patrick Nicholas' squad visits Wise with a 2-4 overall record, 1-4 in conference play, after being selected to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll.

- Catawba went 1-1 this past weekend at home with a 3-1 win over Coker Friday before falling to Wingate Saturday, 3-0. Catawba has not yet won a road match this season while posting a 2-2 record at home.

- Seniors Allie Grubb and Morgan Hester along with sophomore Kylie Morgan highlight the Catawba roster as Grubb finished last season with a team-high 230 kills and 63 blocks while fellow senior Hester averaged nine assists per set. Morgan accumulated 196 kills last season, averaging 2.33 per set.

- So far this season, Morgan leads her team with a total of 85 kills, five per set, and is registering a .284 attack percentage. Hester has tallied a team-high 221 assists while freshman Jasmine Wooten leads Catawba this campaign with 64 digs to date.

- Catawba will stay on the road for a match at Tusculum Saturday afternoon before back-to-back road matches next weekend at Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman.

Notes on Queens University of Charlotte

- Now in her fourth season with the Royals, Head coach Hannah Long's team comes to Wise Saturday following a Friday night match at Tusculum University. Queens (N.C.) was tabbed fifth in this year's preseason coaches' poll.

- Queens (N.C.) currently holds a 7-2 overall mark while going 4-1 in the SAC to start the season.  Queens (N.C.) suffered its sole loss to date this season at the hands of then-No. 25 Wingate University, 3-0. The Royals bounced back to pick up a 3-1 victory at home last Saturday against Coker.

- Junior Casey Tarvin was named to the preseason all-conference first team while fellow juniors Logan Witt and JayCee Jones were selected for the preseason all-conference second team. Tarvin finished 2018 earning several accolades including All-SAC first team and D2CCA first team.

- Freshman Anna McLain leads the Royals this year with 81 kills, averaging 2.61 per set, and a .222 attack percentage. Tarvin and Witt follow with 76 and 73 kills respectively, while Witt maintains a team-best .344 attack percentage.

- Jones and Tarvin have each cracked 100 digs to start the campaign, with Jones tallying a team-high 165 while Tarvin has accumulated 100 digs so far this season. Senior Mallory Swarts is boasting a team-high 304 assists for the Royals.

- Queens (N.C.) will stay on the road next weekend with contests at Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial.

- This is the first volleyball match between UVa-Wise and Catawba since the Cavaliers became a NCAA Division II member.
