WISE – Cavalier women's tennis picked up the first team win of the season against Brevard College Saturday afternoon, 5-2. UVa-Wise swept doubles to take an early 1-0 lead before winning four straight singles matches.
Sophomores Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko swept Brevard's Samantha Sepe and Allison Kogoy at the No.1 doubles position. At No. 2, senior Aya Melhem and sophomore Grace Hall secured a 6-1 victory while freshman Megan Harwood and sophomore Lillian Morris won, 7-6(7-5) at the number three spot.
Liza Akimenko went undefeated on the day with another win at number one singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Sepe. Katya Akimenko also earned her second victory of the day, sweeping Brevard's Hamrick Perry, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 3 spot, Melhem posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Tornados' Eleanor Flannery with Hall adding the final match win of the day for the Cavs at number four, 6-2, 6-1.
Head Coach Danny Rowland's squad returns to the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex next Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Johnson University-Tennessee.
