Cavs Battle, Fall Short to Top Seeded Rams

BECKLEY, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise led top-seeded Shepherd for most of the day Thursday but, the Rams belted a pair of home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to surge past the No. 3 seed from the South Division 5-3 in the opening round of the 2019 Mountain East Conference Tournament at Linda K. Epling Stadium.

UVa-Wise (25-26) took a 2-1 lead in the third inning as redshirt senior Brett Yates plated Tyler Blaum with a double before junior Tristan Peccerelli's two-out run-scoring single scored Yates.

Shepherd (35-14) struggled most of the afternoon with Cavalier starter Landon Faulkner. The redshirt senior allowed a run-scoring double with one in the first and did not allow another base runner until the bottom of the fifth when he hit Nick Atkinson with two outs in the inning.

The right-hander would work out of the jam and keep his team in front 2-1. While Faulkner was setting the Rams down, the UVa-Wise offense was producing hits but not runs.

The Cavs lined 13 hits in the contest but stranded 11 men on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

UVa-Wise would finally dent the scoreboard again in the top of the eighth when Jordon Turner singled home Matthew Branham from first base on a 3-2 pitch.

Trailing 3-1, the MEC North Division Champions came off the mat as Giovani Torres tripled before a two-out run-scoring single off the bat of Jared Carr cut the lead to 3-2.

From there, the Rams belted back-to-back homers as MEC Player of the Year Brenton Doyle hammered a two-run homer and Justin Smith lined a solo shot to put Shepherd in front 5-3.

In the top of the ninth, the Cavs would get a pair of base runners on but Tyler Shorter would win a nine-pitch at bat against Tristan Peccerelli to record the game's final out and earn the save.

Four UVa-Wise players had a multi-hit game, including Yates and Turner who each finished the game with three hits. Pecerelli and Branham each finished the contest 2-for-4 at the plate.

Shepherd was limited to just five hits in the win, Smith was the only Ram with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4.

The Cavs will play for their season tomorrow in an elimination game at 12 p.m. against the loser of Charleston and Fairmont State.
