INSTITUTE, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise women's tennis fell to the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State Sunday, 6-1. Freshman Liza Akimenko picked up a win at the No. 1 singles position for the Cavaliers to improve to 5-1 at the number one spot against league opponents.
West Virginia State (9-4, 2-0 MEC) earned the doubles point after securing victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 position.
At the number two singles spot for the Cavs (2-12, 2-4 MEC), freshman Katya Akimenko fell 6-2, 6-0 to West Virginia State's Kierstin Hensley while junior Aya Melhem dropped her match at the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-1. Senior Montana Hill fell at the number four position to the Yellow Jackets' Kayla McKnight, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Grace Hall was defeated by Chante' Malo at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3, while fellow freshman Olivia Dishner was swept, 8-0, at the six spot.
Danny Rowland's team will return to action next Saturday with a road match against Shepherd University at 1 p.m.
