Cagle's Perfect Day at the Plate Leads to DH Split with Charleston

WISE - - Dawson Cagle had a perfect night at the plate that included a 3-for-3 showing with a home run in game one as UVa-Wise and Charleston split a doubleheader at Stallard Field Monday. Cagle was one of three Cavaliers to homer in game one as UVa-Wise claimed a 7-6 victory before Charleston posted an 8-0 shutout in game two to earn a four-game series split.

UVa-Wise (21-20, 15-9 MEC) built a 7-2 after five innings of play in the opener. Brett Yates and Cagle each lined solo homers while Tristan Peccerelli played long ball for the second consecutive game with a two-run shot.

Yates also had an RBI groundout while Matthew Branham lined a run-scoring double and Ethan Fletcher had an RBI single to stake starter RJ Vanvickle to the big lead.

Vanvickle exited after 5 1/3 innings of work that saw the right-hander scatter six hits, walk three and strike out one before giving way to the bullpen.

From there, things got interesting at Charleston began chipping way. The Golden Eagles scored two in the sixth as Jack Brunetti had an RBI single and Hayden Cartt knocked in a run on a groundout to make it a 7-4 affair going to the bottom of the sixth.

In the home sixth, the Cavs put runners on the corners with only one out only to see UC reliever Robert Fultineer induce an inning ending double play to keep it a three-run game.

UVa-Wise skipper Hank Banner summoned freshman Tyler Hayes from the bullpen in effort to record the game's final three outs.

Hayes would retire the leadoff man on a ground out before Brice Arrington singled through the right side of the infield. Next, Colby Johnson reached on an infield hit and the visitors had the tying run at the plate with just one out in the frame.

Gianfranco Morello would then bounce a grounder to shortstop Jordon Turner who fielded and flipped to second baseman Bret Roberts for the second out of the inning. Roberts would fire the ball to Branham at first base but, Morello was ruled safe on a bang-bang play allowing the game to continue.

UC would then be the beneficiary of back-to-back errors which scored two runs and put the go-ahead and first with UVa-Wise still searching for the game's final out.

With an 0-2 count on Cartt and the tying run at third, Hayes would just miss with a breaking ball; on the pitch, Austin Hathaway stole second putting the go-ahead run in scoring position.

The freshman would work out of the jam as he would get Cartt to pop out to Turner for the game's final out to post his fourth save of 2019.

Vanvickle earned the mound win as he allowed three earned runs to improve to 4-5 on the season.

Game two saw Brunetti toss a complete game two-hit shutout.

Cagle had the only two hits for the Cavs, he also reached base on a hit by pitch.

Hathaway went 3-for-4 to lead a quartet of Golden Eagles who had multiple hits in the win.

UVa-Wise will return to action Saturday when the team hosts West Virginia Wesleyan for a four-game series at Stallard Field.
