INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - On a day that senior David Thomas became the 14th player in school history to reach 150 career hits, UVa-Wise split a doubleheader at West Virginia State. The Cavaliers belted five home runs, including two by Dawson Cagle in a 10-4 win in the opener before the Yellow Jackets responded with a 2-0 win in the night cap.
UVa-Wise (18-17, 12-6 MEC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener on a three-run homer by Cagle. Hank Banner's team would never trail in the game as the guests lined five homers, including a second three-run homer by Cagle in the fifth inning.
West Virginia State (16-17, 11-7 MEC) would get within two runs on a solo homer by Matt Harrison in the home second before a two run blast by Connor Slagill made it a 6-3 contest in the third inning.
Cagle's three-run blast was part of a four-run fifth that propelled the Cavs to the game one victory.
Thomas, Tyler Blaum and Brett Yates also homered in game one to back starter Greg Duncan who improved to 6-1 on the year with a complete game effort.
Game two saw UVa-Wise starter Landon Faulkner and West Virginia State starter Kenneth Daniels lock up in a pitcher's duel.
Harrison would provide the only runs of the game with a two-run homer in the sixth. Faulkner's final stat line read 5 2/3 innings pitched, six hits, three strike outs, two walks and two earned runs.
Daniels allowed just three hits in a complete game effort with all three of the hits coming from Thomas. Thomas' first hit of the game was the 150th of his career; it marked the second time this season a Cav reached the mark as Thomas joins teammate Yates among the 14 players in the 150-hit club.
Due to forecasted bad weather, the series will take a day off before resuming Monday with a doubleheader. First pitch from Institute, W.Va. is set for 2 p.m. Â
