BRISTOL, Tenn. - - Women's tennis earned a 4-3 conference win over Fairmont State University Saturday afternoon. The Cavs picked up four singles wins as Danny Rowland's team improved to 2-1 in the Mountain East Conference.
Cavalier (2-8, 2-1 MEC) freshmen Liza and Katya Akimenko played at the number one doubles position where the duo were outlasted 6-3 by Fairmont (3-5, 1-1 MEC). The Fighting Falcons picked up another doubles win at the No. 2 spot as senior Montana Hill and freshman Grace Hall fell 6-1. Junior Aya Melhem and freshman Olivia Dishner earned a hard-fought No. 3 doubles win with a 6-4 victory over the Fighting Falcons' Katelyn Shirkey and Hayley Hatfield.
Liza Akimenko extended her singles match win streak to four with her 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 defeat of Fairmont's Klamadji, earning a comeback win in the third set after trailing 5-2. At No. 2 singles, Katya Akimenko improved to 2-1 in league play at the position with a  6-3, 6-2 victory.
Melhem topped her opponent 6-0, 6-3 at the number three spot while Hill fell 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Hall also won her singles match at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 7-5, over the Fighting Falcons' Hayley Hatfield. Fairmont ended up with the win at the number six position as Dishner was defeated 6-1, 6-2.
The Cavs return to action Saturday, March 16 for a non-conference match against Cedarville University. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex.
