Cavs Drop Close Match to Cedarville

WISE - - In their first match of the spring at the Jim and Betty Humphreys Tennis Complex, the Cavaliers fell 4-3 to Cedarville University Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers (2-9) started off the afternoon on a down note as they lost the doubles point to the Yellow Jackets (9-3). Freshmen Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko were defeated at the No. 1 position 6-4, while freshmen Grace Hall and Lillian Morris fell 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Junior Aya Melhem and freshman Olivia Dishner battled their way to a 7-6 victory at the No. 3 position to improve to 2-0 as a tandem this season.

After falling behind 1-0 for the day, the Cavaliers quickly responded with wins in the top three singles positions. Liza Akimenko defeated Liana English 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 position, while Katya Akimenko won 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 2 position over Janelle English. Melhem picked up her second win of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Rosie Thompson at the No. 3 position. 

The Cavaliers struggled in the bottom positions, as Hall and senior Montana Hill each fell 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 and No.4 positions, respectively. The match would be decided at the No. 6 position, where Dishner was defeated 6-1, 6-0 to give Cedarville the victory. 

The Cavaliers will return to action next Sunday when they play on the road at the University of Pikeville. They will return home the following weekend for a conference match against West Virginia Wesleyan College on March 31.
