No. 6 UVa-Wise Tangles with No. 3 Concord in MEC Quarterfinals Thursday

Storylines – vs CONCORD

In the midst of the best season in school history, Concord enters the league tournament with an outside shot of an at large bid in the NCAA Tournament. Having already won a school record 22 games, the Mountain Lions were ranked eighth in the most recent NCAA Division II Atlantic Region rankings. Any hope of an at large berth will require Kenny Osborne's team to win its third game of the season against UVa-Wise Thursday. Madison May became the first Concord player in five seasons to earn All-MEC First-Team recognition after posting 18.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Teammates Riley Fitzwater and Adrienna Pool made All-MEC Second-Team; Fitzwater leads the nation in field goal percentage (.661) and leads the league in blocked shots (4.0) per game while Poole netted 16.4 points per game and shot 41.3 percent from the 3-point line. In its most recent win over the Cavaliers, the Mountain Lions used the free throw line to offset a rebounding deficit. Concord went to the charity stripe 37 times, making 24, to upend UVa-Wise as the Cavs went to the line just 17 times in the game. Concord is winless all-time in the MEC Tournament has not won a postseason game since Feb. 27, 2012 when the team beat Wheeling Jesuit in the WVIAC Tournament.

About uva-wise

Led by All-MEC Second-Team performer Cynita Webb, UVa-Wise will look to remain undefeated all-time in its first MEC Tournament game. The Cavaliers missed last year's tournament but, prior to 2018 the team had won a game in each of the first four league tournaments. One of those opening wins came over a higher seeded Concord team in 2015 when UVa-Wise went to Athens and claimed a 77-59 win. Ironically, that season the Mountain Lions won both of the regular season meetings as they have this year. In Saturday's loss to Concord, UVa-Wise won every facet of the game but shooting percentage. Jamie Cluesman's team out rebounded Concord 44-36, took 71 shots compared to 47, shot 92.3 percent from the foul line and turned it over just 12 times. The Cavs issues came from the floor as UVa-Wise made just 32.4 percent of its field goal attempts and 12.5 percent of its 3-point attempts. By comparison, Concord connected on 45.4 percent of its field goal attempts and 42.8 percent of its 3-pointers. A UVa-Wise win would propel the Cavs to their second ever MEC Semifinal, the team last made the semifinals in 2017 where they lost to eventual tournament champion Wheeling Jesuit.
