HARROGATE, Tenn. - - Henry's Moore eighth inning two-run homerun proved to be the difference as host Lincoln Memorial University score a 7-6 non-conference victory over UVa-Wise Tuesday afternoon. Moores homer completed a comeback for the Railsplitters who trailed 6-4 entering the eighth inning in the final non-league contest between the two schools; next year, UVa-Wise will join LMU as members of the South Atlantic Conference.
Moore's homer capped a day of comebacks for LMU (16-8), the Railspillters fell behind 3-0 after an inning and a half of play before taking a 4-3 lead going to the top of the seventh only to find themselves down a run entering the home eighth.
UVa-Wise (6-11) jumped out to the early 3-0 lead behind RBIs by Brock Smith, Tyler Blaum and Bret Roberts in the top of the second only to see the hosts cut the deficit to 3-2 after three innings of play on a two-run double by Nate Sinson.
LMU took its first lead of the day on a solo homer by Chris Salvey in the sixth only to see Tyler Blaum tie the game in the eighth after doubling and scoring an RBI single by Dawson Cable. The Cavaliers took the lead on a run-scoring double by Tristan Peccerelli and later pushed across an insurance run on a passed ball to bake it a 6-4 game after seven and a half innings of play.
Salvey lined his second homer of the day to cut the defict to one before Moore's blast provided the winning runs for the Railsplitters.
UVa-Wise had two on with nobody out in the top of the ninth but, Blaum lined into a double play to end the scoring threat.
Roberts finished with two hits to lead UVa-Wise while Dalton Dedas had three to lead LMU. The Cavs will begin league play this Saturday on the road against West Liberty University.
