Storylines – vs. Berea College (Ky.)
Berea College (Ky.) will halt USA South conference play to visit Wise Tuesday for the 2019 Kid's Day inside the Prior Center. In his ninth season with the team, Head Coach John Hemenway's Mountaineers hold an 11-10 overall record with a 6-8 USA South mark. The men's team is coming off of a 74-69 loss to William Peace University Sunday after opening the month with a 111-104 defeat of Pfeiffer University Saturday. The Mountaineers are posting 79.6 points per game led by Berea sophomore guard Torrell Carter who leads his team in scoring this season with 21.2 points per game and shooting 53 percent from the floor. The Mountaineers have four players averaging double figures including freshmen Isaac Caudill (18.4 ppg) and Andrew Doty (11.2 ppg), and sophomore Deandre Lightfoot (11 ppg). Carter is also the team's top rebounder with 8.5 per game while Berea is averaging 39.8 rebounds per game as a team. From the field, the Mountaineers are recording a field goal percentage of 44.2 percent, shooting 3.15 percent from behind the arc, and 71.3 percent from the foul line. Berea College will play two of their last four games of the regular season this weekend at home before wrapping up their campaign on the road next week.

UVa-Wise will begin a three-game homestand Tuesday as the Cavs step out of Mountain East conference play to host Berea College (Ky.) for the 2019 Kid's Day inside the Prior Center. Blake Mellinger's team posted a 1-1 record last week with an 85-79 home win over West Virginia Wesleyan College before falling at the buzzer to Glenville State, 86-84, on the road. Despite 18 three-point field goals for the Bobcats, UVa-Wise pulled off a six-point win with the help of a 22-point effort by redshirt freshman Briggs Parris. Parris connected on 6-of-12 shots from downtown and added four assists in the win. The Cavs shot a season-high 60.8 percent (31-for-51) from the field and knocked down 13 shots from behind the arc and missed just one (10-for-11) from the charity stripe. In the loss to Glenville, freshman Cam Whiteside recorded his second consecutive double-digit scoring game with a season and career-high 26 points and added nine rebounds. UVa-Wise struggled offensively against the Pioneers, shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from three, and hitting just 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line. The Cavs are averaging 83.4 ppg on 44 percent shooting from the field this season and are averaging over 10 three-pointers per game. Coach Mellinger's team will resume league play on Thursday against No. 8 West Liberty and will return to action on Saturday to take the court against Wheeling Jesuit.
