Storylines – vs Charleston
In a two-way tie for second place in the league standings and in eighth in the most up-to-date Atlantic Region Poll, Charleston is attempting to play its way into the NCAA Tournament. Led by two NCAA Division I transfer guards, the Golden Eagles have won back-to-back games entering Wednesday's contest. Western Carolina University transfer Raziyah Farrington is in consideration for league player of the year, the 5-foot-8 senior has been named conference player of the week three times, including last week when she made all 16 of her field goal attempts in a win over Fairmont State. For the week, Farrington averaged 30 points, 5.5 assists and three steals per game. Fellow guard and Detroit Mercy transfer Gracie Roberts is dishing out a team-high five assists per game to rank third in the league. As a team, Charleston leads the conference in scoring defense by holding opponents to 63.5 points per game while ranking second in the league in field goal percentage defense at 38.6 percent. Thus far, the Golden Eagles have held their opponent under 60 points on 13 occasions.
Having secured a bye in next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament, UVa-Wise will attempt to rebound from a 66-60 loss at Notre Dame College over the weekend. In the loss, the Cavaliers were outrebounded 51-41 which included 21 offensive rebounds by the Falcons. It was a vast difference from what has been the norm for first-year Head Coach Jamie Cluesman's squad. On the season, UVa-Wise is winning the battle of the boards by an average of 3.9 per game. Wednesday's game will pit two coaches who are in the running for league coach of the year accolades. Both in their first-year, Cluesman has guided UVa-Wise to at worst a sixth place finish in the regular seasons after being chosen last while Becky Burke has Charleston battling for a NCAA Tournament berth. In the first meeting between the two schools this season, the Golden Eagles limited the Cavs to 28.6 percent shooting while outscoring UVa-Wise 39-18 in the second half en route to a 72-55 triumph. The Cavs will wrap up the 2019 regular season Saturday against Concord, the program will recognize five seniors as part of Senior Day festivities.
