WISE - - In a battle of future South Atlantic Conference rivals, it was the No. 22 Carson-Newman Eagles who came out on top 9-4 over visiting UVa-Wise Tuesday.
Carson – Newman (11-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Jordan Griffin belted a solo homer. The Eagles would eventually load the bases in the inning but, would be unable to do further damage as UVa-Wise (0-7) left-hander Trevor Neville induced a 1-2-3 ground ball double play before another groundout ended the threat.
The hosts pushed the margin to 4-0 after three innings of play as Malik Kyle had an RBI infield single before Michael Wroth had a two-run double.
The Cavaliers dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when junior Tyler Blaum blasted an opposite field homerun, his first of the season. Later in the inning senior Brock Smith singled down the left field line and after an error, two runs were able to scamper home to make it a 4-3 contest.
The momentum was short lived as CN bounced back with a five-run seventh inning. Ethan Goforth homered to left field to begin the big inning before Griffin singled home a run before swiping home. Brendan Campbell scored on a wild pitch and Wroth came home on an error to cap the scoring.
Hank Banner's club would mount a rally in the eighth as the Cavaliers would load the bases with nobody out. However, UVa-Wise would plate just a single run on a sacrifice fly by Dawson Cagle as Hunter Long worked out of the jam.
Logan Cogburn (1-0) earned the win by tossing five innings of three-hit baseball. Cogburn fanned a pair and walked two to earn his first victory of the year.
UVa-Wise used nine pitchers over eight innings of work. Landon Faulkner started the game and struck out all three batters he faced while Tyler Hayes and Garrett Stiltner also tossed perfect innings.
