Storylines – vs Glenville State
The top scoring team in NCAA Division II, Glenville State's 104.8 points per game has the program on the cusp of yet another MEC crown. The Pioneers have won back-to-back regular season conference titles and three overall since the formation of the conference in 2014. The program has also claimed the league's tournament championship in 2014 and 2018. Overall, third-year coach Kim Stephens boasts a 52-5 record in MEC play while having won 40 of her last 41 league games. Junior guard Emily Stoller has been the catalyst for the Pioneers this winter. The 6-foot-1 native of Fairmont, W.Va. is tied for the league lead with 59 made 3-point field goals while averaging 20.7 points per game. Stoller is one five Glenville State players to average double figure scoring on the season. Additionally, she is one of five Pioneers who have made at least 20 3-pointers this season; as a team, Glenville State has made a NCAA Division II leading 288 shots from beyond the arc.
The surprise team of the MEC, UVa-Wise enters Saturday's game at Glenville State tied for sixth in the league standings with a 7-6 mark. Picked last in the preseason poll, first-year coach Jamie Cluesman's team has used the play of junior Cynita Webb and the team's depth to defy preseason predictions. Webb enters the weekend having recorded a double-double in three consecutive contests. The 5-foot-11 forward has tallied 11 double-doubles on the season and her five offensive rebounds per game ranks third nationally among all NCAA Division II players. The junior is just one of five forwards that have emerged for the Cavaliers. Redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson is posting 8.7 rebounds per game while sophomore Ada Stanley is netting 8.3 points a night, freshman Mackenzie King is tallying 6.7 points a contest and sophomore Nokomis Williams is blocking 1.6 shots per game to rank third in the league. Senior point guard Janice Ladson is coming off the best game of her UVa-Wise career, the 5-foot-3 Ladson scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting to lead the Cavs to a 73-54 win over West Virginia Wesleyan at the Prior Center Wednesday.
