Storylines – vs. Newberry College
In his first season with the Wolves, Head Coach Jason Taylor's team will travel to Wise Saturday for their third road conference game of the campaign. Newberry is currently 2-2 in league play, 6-3 overall, posting a road win at Catawba in November, 91-84, before defeating Anderson this past week, 76-67. Coach Taylor's squad was selected to finish ninth in this year's South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches poll after a 10-18 overall mark, 5-15 in the SAC, in their 2018-19 season. Senior guard Angelo Sales, Jr. also earned preseason all-conference second team honors as he currently leads his team in scoring averaging 16.9 points per game while Sales sits atop the rebounding category in the league collecting 9.3 boards per game. Sales is shooting a team-high 59.4 percent from the field while sophomore TJ Brown is the only other play to average double-figure scoring with 14.9 ppg while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor. As a team, the Wolves are averaging 77.7 ppg compared to 70 ppg for opponents while shooting 46.3 percent from the field. Newberry is rebounding at a +10.1 margin over the opposition, averaging 40.8 boards per game while dishing out 12.9 assists per contest, led by senior Marshall Lange who is posting 2.6 assists per game. Newberry will wrap up December with a contest at West Alabama next Friday set for 5 p.m.

UVA Wise fell in the Cavaliers first conference road game of the season this past Saturday, 109-87, to Catawba inside Goodman Gymnasium. Sophomore
Cameron Whiteside had a standout performance in the loss as he captured a career-high 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. The loss puts the Cavs at 1-2 in conference play, 4-4 overall, as the team looks to rebound against Newberry Saturday. So far this season, UVA Wise is averaging 86.5 points per game while shooting 46 percent (fourth in the SAC) from the field and 77.1 percent (third in the SAC) from the charity stripe. Whiteside is posting a team-high 18.8 ppg (tied for sixth in the SAC) followed by redshirt sophomore
Briggs Parris who is averaging 13.8 ppg. Parris also leads the Cavs and the SAC with his 3.2 three-point field goals per game. Freshman

Chance Sheffey continue to sit atop the free throw percentage category in the conference with Greene shooting 95.5 percent (first in the SAC) and Sheffey shooting 94.4 percent (third in the SAC) from the foul line. Sheffey continues to serve as the league leader in assists with 5.6 per game and ranks fourth (2.8) in the SAC in assist/turnover ratio while Whiteside (4.0) ranks first in the league. As a team, the Cavs are averaging 39.6 boards per game compared to 37.3 rebounds per contest for opponents while UVA Wise's 17.8 assists per game place them second in the category in the conference. Coach Mellinger's team will wrap up December with back-to-back games next week at Tusculum University Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. before returning to Wise to take on Ohio University-Chillicothe Wednesday at noon for Kids Day.
