Cavalier Men Face Anderson in Saturday Afternoon Matchup


Storylines – vs. Anderson University (S.C.)
The Trojans of Anderson University visit Wise Saturday afternoon in the teams' first ever meeting. Head coach Jeff Brookman's team currently holds a 3-2 overall mark after suffering their first conference loss this past Tuesday  to Queens, 78-74. In his fifth season with the team, Coach Brookman's Trojans were selected to finish eighth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll, after posting a 10-10 league record last season, with a preseason second team all-conference selection in redshirt senior Shawn Benard. So far this season, Benard ranks second in both rebounding (6 rpg) and scoring (18.8 ppg) for Anderson. Josh Livingston serves as the rebounding leader (8.2 rpg, fourth in the SAC) while junior Quin Nottingham is the conference scoring leader, averaging 26 ppg. Livingston is the only other Trojan to average double figures to start the campaign with 15 ppg.  As a team, Anderson is shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 32.5 percent from behind the arc, and 72.4 percent from the free throw line. The Trojans are totaling 13.6 turnovers per game while their opponents are recording over 17 per contest. Anderson is registering 33.6 rebounds per game compared to 42.6 per game for opponents to start the campaign. The Trojans will host Carson-Newman next Saturday in the team's home opener at 4 p.m.

UVA Wise dropped its first South Atlantic Conference match of the season Tuesday evening in a 92-87 loss to Mars Hill University. Senior Chance Sheffey had a career-day in the loss as he tallied a career-high 10 made field goals and collected a career-high 25 points. Sheffey shot an impressive 10-for-14 from the floor and was 3-for-4 from behind the arc while going a perfect 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. Four more Cavalier men scored in double figures including freshman Drew Greene who recorded his season-high 16 points while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. Sophomore Kaeleb Carter made his return to the court with 14 points while fellow sophomore Cameron Whiteside added 13 points and senior Eric Okenchi registered 11 points and a team-high eight boards against the Lions. As a team, UVA Wise is shooting 46.2 percent from the floor while holding opponents to 44.4 percent shooting from the field. The Cavaliers have struggled from behind the arc to start the season, shooting just 29.6 percent from downtown. Head coach Blake Mellinger's team is winning the rebounding battle against opponents, averaging 41.5 boards per game compared to 34.7 rebounds per game for opponents. The team's 18 assists per contest rank them second in the league while the team's 75 percent free throw shooting puts UVA Wise in the top-5 in the SAC rankings. All five starters are averaging double-figures while Whiteside leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging16 points and seven boards per game. Sheffey's 5.8 assists per game this season place him atop the category in the conference. Coach Mellinger's team will open up December on the road taking on Catawba College next Saturday with tip slated for 9 p.m.
