Storylines – vs Concord
A year ago, Concord had arguably its best season in school history, winning 23 games as Osborne was named Regional Coach of the Year. Two-time all-conference guard Madison May is off to a fast start for veteran coach Kenny Osborne's Mountain Lions. The senior is netting 22.7 points per game while grabbing 10 rebounds a contest to lead her team to a 2-1 start. The guard is joined by one of the nation's premier post players in junior Riley Fitzwater. A year ago, Fitzwater led the nation with more than four blocks per game while recording 12 double-doubles. The 6-foot-4 Fitzwater is averaging 13.7 points, 12.7 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per contest while having recorded a double-double in two of the first three games. In Concord's most recent 75-45 win over Bluefield State, Maggie Guynn registered 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting while going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. The game will pit mentor vs. mentee as UVa-Wise coach Jamie Cluesman was a four-year player for Osborne before later being an assistant coach at Concord. Earlier this year, she was inducted into the school's hall of fame.
Senior Cynita Webb has played like a woman on a mission to begin her final collegiate season. The 5-foot-11 forward entered the year with a chance to become the first player in the NCAA Division II era of the program to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career. Thus far, she's averaging 19.5 points and 13 rebounds a game through the first two contests of the season to enter the Concord game with 835 points and 695 rebounds. Webb's strong play along with the play of redshirt junior Kalee Johnson has the Cavaliers off to a 1-1 start. Most recently, Johnson netted a career-high 18 points in an 87-53 win over Converse Saturday. What's been most impressive about the play of Webb and Johnson has been their shooting ability. Webb is shooting 65.2 percent from the field while Johnson is canning 60 percent of her shots from the floor. The duo make up two of a starting five that is all averaging double digits in scoring in the early going. Sophomore Mackenzie King is posting 12 points a night, freshman Caitlyn Ross is averaging 11 points a game and junior Hanna Oliver is averaging 10 points a game. Rebounding has been a strong point for Jamie Cluesman's team. Through the first two games, the Cavs have won the battle of the boards by a combined tally of 80-to-66. A player to watch Thursday could be junior Ada Stanley. As a sophomore, the forward averaged 14.3 points per game in three meetings against the Mountain Lions while making 16-of-24 field goal attempts.
