Men's Basketball Hosts Piedmont International for Home Opener

Storylines – vs. Piedmont International
In his fourth season at the helm of the program, Head Coach Josh Howard's Piedmont International Bruins will visit Wise for the team's second road game of the season. The Bruins are coming off a road loss to NAIA member Voorhees College (S.C.) where Piedmont fell to 92-81 to the Tigers. In the loss the Bruins shot 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three, and 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the foul line. The team totaled 31 rebounds to 43 for Voorhees and turned the ball over 25 times with eight steals. Piedmont returns senior Tamir Glenn who led the team last season in scoring, rebounding, and assists. The 6-foot-5 forward netted17.3 points per game and averaged 7.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists during the 2018-19 campaign. Glenn also posted a team-high 1.5 steals per game while shooting 71.1 percent (106-for-149) from the charity stripe. Coach Howard's team finished last season with a 12-19 overall mark, 4-5 in conference, with their final win of the campaign against Nebraska Christian College in the NCCAA championship tournament. The Bruins will follow Tuesday's game with an exhibition at Life University with the team's home opener set for Tuesday, Nov. 19 against Winston-Salem State University.

Head coach Blake Mellinger's squad opened the 2019-20 campaign with back-to-back losses at the Conference Carolinas/SAC Challenge this weekend. The Cavs dropped the season opener to King, 84-74, Friday night before falling to host institution Lees-McRae, 89-78, Saturday afternoon. Five Cavaliers scored in double-figures at least once this past weekend with sophomore Kaeleb Carter leading the way with back-to-back double-figure contests. The 6-foot-5 forward netted a team-high 20 points in the season opener and 10 points against Lees-McRae. Sophomore Cameron Whiteside was the only other player who cracked 20 points for UVa-Wise with a team-high 21 points in the team's loss to the Bobcats Saturday afternoon. Through the first two contests of the campaign, the Cavs are shooting 42.9 percent (57-for-133) from the field and just 62.5 percent (25-for-40) from the free throw line. Whiteside and Carter also lead the team in rebounding to start the season, with Whiteside totaling 13 boards while Carter follows with eight rebounds through the first weekend of games. Coach Mellinger's team will quickly get back on the road to play an exhibition tilt at Division I program Samford University before returning to Wise for four-straight home games.
